Paints and Recreation 00:00:20

Courtney Austin and Melissa Mortella will be presenting their conceptual plans for this summer’s Paints and Recreation program at Fire Station #1. Over 170 local children participated in this program last year painting murals at Jefferson Park and registration for this year is already full. This year’s plan involves murals to celebrate the history of the Fire Department, memorialize those who have died in the line of duty, honor 911, and celebrate all the good work that comes from that station and the entire Fire Department.

Budget Amendment for WRRF bridges 00:20:17

The traveling bridges that serve our primary and secondary clarifiers (remove solids and scum from the water) are in need of complete replacement and have recently experienced several failures. This equipment is not scheduled nor are we ready (engineering grant was just awarded) to remove them and install different technology for three to five years. Major repairs are necessary to ensure that the WRRF continues to function in compliance with our facilities permit. The repairs are estimated to cost $200,000 and the work needs to be specified and bid out with an estimated cost of $10,000 for engineering. Funding is available in the Sewer Fund Capital but will need to be repurposed. The Capital Budget included the full design for Primary Clarifier Upgrades (Primary Equipment Retrofit Connections); however, the City has recently been awarded Engineering Planning Grant to perform preliminary design and engineering which will be used for future grant applications to complete the extensive renovations of the primary clarifiers.

New Special Event- Earth Day (BID) 00:31:34

The BID has requested approval of an Earth Day Special Event on 4/22/24. The goal of the event is promotion/education around sustainability in the community. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include use of the Commons and Central on Main (if complete) for live music and educational sessions, vendor tables set up along both sides of Main Street, a downtown garbage cleanup sponsored by the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association (CLWA) and possible tours of the charging stations and rain gardens.

Fireworks – Informational Update 00:36:37

City Staff met with the Town of Canandaigua to discuss collaborating on a fireworks display. The meeting resulted in a tentative plan for a joint fireworks event on August 31st to celebrate the Ring of Fire along with a community event prior to the fireworks. Note that Lincoln Hill Farms just outside of the City and Town hosts a July 4th fireworks event. We have reached out to Friends of Ganondagan to ensure that we plan a respectful event, mindful of their traditions and will be meeting with them.

Woodlawn Cemetery Drainage - Update 00:48:57

The City has been working with FEMA since the July 9th flood event to address the heavy damage sustained within Woodlawn Cemetery. The City has a drainage easement within Woodlawn Cemetery coupled with a portion of an internal cemetery drainage system. We have been exploring upsizing the current system and separating the City’s from the cemetery. To offset construction costs, FEMA funding is anticipated to be applied. The FEMA funding application requires a detailed hydraulic analysis with a construction drawing stamped by a professional engineer. The City has a pre-existing professional services relationship with Lu Engineers who has submitted a proposal for the analysis.

Red-Light Cameras 00:54:08

On March 7th, the City Council moved forward, via Resolution, a request for home rule legislation to give the City authority for red light cameras. Councilmember Michael Mills has requested a discussion about other mechanisms for education and enforcement.

Maximum Size of Residential Garages 01:20:50

The ZBA has suggested amending the definition of residential garages as well as suggesting that dimensional standards be established. Proposed changes have been an ongoing discussion.

Canandaigua Lady Signage 01:22:42

In May 2023, via Resolution #2023-055, the City Council approved the installation of two (2) signs on City-owned property for the Canandaigua Lady. The ground sign, at the Lakeshore Drive entrance, was limited to 12 SF not to exceed 6’ in height, wooden, carved with a historic aesthetic and a directional sign, 6 sf, not to exceed 5’ in height (approved to direct traffic around the parking garage to the Lakefront municipal lot). Canandaigua Lady management presented renderings for the new sign to be installed this spring. At 18-sf, the proposed sign is larger than the 12-sf size limit placed by Council. They are also requesting an additional directional sign.
